Merton Council – Climate Action Plan – Update 1

Climate Action Plan – Update 1

The Climate Action Plan by Merton Council is currently being developed with residents, businesses and non-governmental organisations across the borough. The development of the Climate Action Plan is a cross party commitment resulting from Council’s declaration of a climate emergency.

At the time that the climate emergency was declared Councillor Byers, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care, Health and the Environment, set out the following next steps, which we would like to update you on:

(1) Climate Emergency Working Group. The group is made up of a range of individuals, businesses, organisations and young residents from Merton to provide advice and steer the formation of the Climate Action Plan. The group had its first meeting in September and will meet again this week. To find out more about the group, its activities, or its members, please go to this link. If you want to make contact with any of the group members, please email Future Merton (future.merton@merton.gov.uk).

(2) Online survey. This survey is now live and will be open until Monday 9th December. It consists of a series of short questions designed to understand what you think is important in relation to the action plan. There is also an opportunity to make specific suggestions if you wish. Please note there is a separate survey for residents and a survey for those representing an organisation. Please feel free to share these links with your networks. For more detailed proposals, please email Future Merton (future.merton@merton.gov.uk).

(3) Work on projects. If you are already taking action in the borough on climate change, or would like to, we would like to hear from you. Please feel free to contact us through the Future Merton email (future.merton@merton.gov.uk).

In addition to the actions above we are in the process of commissioning consultants to help us get a more accurate picture of the greenhouse gas emissions arising from the borough, and the pace and scale of change needed to meet our decarbonisation targets. We are also taking steps to make sure that the voices of young residents are heard as the action plan is formed.
